Whether you've been assisted by a member of the IT department or are running into it on your own you may be wondering "What the heck is Okta?" Lets break this down for you:
What is it?
Okta is a platform that provides secure access to company applications and information. It does this by enabling what is known as Multi-Factor Authentication. If you want to know more about what that is, feel free to ask a member of the IT department. For now though, we will go over ways you may encounter Okta authentication during your day-to-day work and how to get through those instances without issue.
Getting Connected to Okta
While the IT Department tries their best to make sure your computer is completely set-up and good to go for your first day, there are certain things that we are unable to work on until you start your first day. Getting you connected to Okta is one of those things because getting the Multi-Factor Authentication set-up requires you to provide information that we are not privy to. It is likely that, on your first day, a member of IT walked you through getting set-up for Okta for the first time. However, if that didn't happen, the following instructions should get you to where you need to be:
- Using any web browser of your choice (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) type the following address in the address bar and hit enter on your keyboard:
- In the field labeled Username, type in your full email address.
- In the field labeled Password, type in the password you use to log-into your laptop.
- Make sure to check the box labeled "Remember Me". Then click Sign In.
- The next window begins the Multi-Factor Authentication set-up. It starts off with SMS Authentication which uses a code sent to your mobile phone via text. Click on Configure factor in order to get started.
- Type in your cell phone number and click on Send code.
- A six-digit code will be sent to the number you typed in earlier. Key in that code into the empty space provided and then click Verify.
- Once that is done, Okta will give you other optional factors you can use in order to safeguard your account even further. However, these are optional and thus are not required to move forward. They can be configured later should you wish to utilize them. For now, click on Finish.
Installing the Okta Plug-In
Welcome to your Okta Dashboard! We recommend bookmarking this site for easy access in the future. If this is your first time in the Okta dashboard, you most likely have something telling you that your apps require the Okta browser plugin. Not only is this required, it makes accessing Okta applications extremely easy. Use the following steps to get the Okta Plug-in installed. Please note, these instructions may differ depending on the Web Browser you choose to use:
- Click on the blue button labeled "Install Plugin".
- Wait for the Plug-In to download and then click either Run or Save.
- Follow the installation steps. You should be okay with hitting yes or next to get past each step easily.
- Locate the new Okta plug-in at the top left corner of your Web Browser. It should look like a blue circle. (Note: if using Internet Explorer, you may be required to enable add-ons before seeing it).
- Once the circle is present, go back to: https://level10.okta.com/
- Sign in using your credentials. And you are done!
You can use that Okta blue circle as a quick way to get to your apps without having to travel to the Okta website! If you have any questions about Okta or need any help, feel free to reach out to the IT department through our Help Desk e-mail (Support@Level10gc.com).
